Each part of the body is related to another. This phenomenon has been known for centuries and is often referred to as body correspondence. Reflexology specifically concentrates on working these 'corresponding' areas of the feet and hands.
Reflexology has a major influence on the acupuncture meridians (energy channels) of the body. It is a fact that many of the major meridians begin and end in the feet. Chinese medical philosophy concentrates on maintaining the flow of energy through these meridians. If the energy is obstructed the reflex can often be painful. The skill of the reflexologist lies in working on any 'obstructed' areas to release congestion and enhance the body's natural healing ability.
The concepts and techniques taught at Advanced Reflexology Training (ART) were first formulated and adapted by Anthony Porter in 1989 to fulfil the demand by qualified reflexologists for continuing education in advanced techniques.
ART extends the preconceived boundaries of reflexology, and explores different approaches to the therapy, gaining a deeper understanding of the physiological functions of the body, with the primary purpose of making the therapy as effective as possible. ART techniques are believed by many reflexologists to be the most therapeutically effective. They were conceived to provide the best possible clinical treatment for patients.
Sadly, much of reflexology is not focused on this approach, but more towards a relaxation therapy method, which without doubt, it can be and should be used for, when appropriate. It is no surprise to hear patients remark after receiving a session of ART reflexology that they realise, for the first time, just what a real reflexology treatment is all about! Because they felt the treatment to be positive and strangely stimulating and relaxing at the same time. Each treatment will usually take one hour and a course of treatments is advised to obtain maximum results.
There are numerous conditions for which reflexology can be beneficial. There is enough anecdotal evidence available to suggest that reflexology is very effective in the treatment of various hormonal conditions. Some of the ART techniques have been specifically developed to treat hormonal and gynaecological conditions. Other conditions for which reflexology has shown to be effective include:
